Weather Idioms — look and try to understand the meaning.

As for me, I didn’t like Idioms in the past because It was really hard to translate it and I didn’t know where I can find definition in Russian. Sometimes I even cried when I was in school and was really confused by Idioms. But now the situation has changed and sometimes I fall in love with new Idiom. Now I liked “head in the clouds” and to be snowed under by work.

Exercise A

  1. He’s a fair-weather friend — g) someone who you can trust only when things are going well
  2. She has her head in the clouds — f) when you are not thinking clearly
  3. He was sick yesterday, but today he is right as rain. — h) to feel fine

4. He left his last job under a cloud — i) under bad circumstances (быть в подавленном состоянии (I write it for me to not to forget))

5. Every cloud has a silver lining — j) bad things always have a good side

6. It’s a storm in a teacup — c) when people become upset over unimportant things

7. I’m feeling a bit under the weather — b) depressed because you are not well, ill

8. I’m snowed under by work now — d) to have a lot of work (or to be busy)

9. It never rains but it pours — e) troubles always come close together (беды всегда приходят близко друг к другу)

10. We’re having an Indian summer — a) abnormally hot weather

Exercise B

  1. fair-weather friend — ветреный друг, друг только в хорошую погоду, ненадежный друг, друг до первой победы
  2. head in the clouds — витать в облаках (голова в облаках), ворон считать за окном
  3. right as rain — крепкая здоровьем, чувствовать себя огурчиком (или как огурчик), быть здоровой, как бык
  4. under a cloud — в тяжелом положении, в немилости, в опале
  5. Every cloud has a silver lining. — нет худа без добра или посмотри на проблему с другой перспективы
  6. storm in a teacup — делать из мухи слона
  7. under the weather — чувствовать себя не в своей тарелке
  8. snowed under by work — дел по горло
  9. It never rains but it pours — беда не приходит одна
  10. Indian summer — бабье лето, золотая осень
